Law Faculty Services Guide

University Libraries Borrowing Privileges

  • Law faculty may borrow books and other materials from any University Libraries location.
    • Must present university ID in order to check out material. 
  • Law faculty are responsible for all materials charged to their account.

The Library catalog

  • The library catalog is the online catalog of materials owned by Penn State Libraries.
  • The Law Library catalog is fully integrated with University Libraries. 
  • Access the library catalog.

I Want It

  • “I Want It” is a feature of the the library catalog for requesting delivery of materials from one Penn State library location to a requested library location for pick-up.
    • Click on the “I Want It” icon when the selected item is displayed.
    • Choose the pick-up location from the drop-down list.

Interlibrary Loan

  • ILLiad is the the interlibrary loan system used by the Penn State University Libraries. 
  • Law faculty may request:
    • Items (books, articles, DVDs, etc) from libraries outside of the Penn State network. 
    • Documents, such as a copy of an article, from another Penn State library. 
  • To request an item log into ILLiad using PSU credentials.
  • Call  (717-240-5267) or email the Law Library for assistance.

My Library Account

  • Feature of the library catalog:
    • View the status of materials that have been requested through the library catalog.
    • View items checked out.
    • Renew items.
    • Cancel holds.

Fines and Charges

  • Fines and charges may be assessed for lost books, failure to return recalled materials, or overdue fines on certain materials.
  • Law faculty are not subject to payroll wage garnishment for payment of fines and charges.  However, borrowing privileges may be suspended until payment of charges is made through alternate means.
  • Law faculty should make every effort to avoid fines and charges.
  • The Law Library's Access Services Manager, Jeri Fitzsimons, should be notified for assistance with payment and resolution.

Faculty Office Checkout

  • Members of the law faculty have a personal library account and a “Faculty Office Account”.
  • Personal Library Account
    • University Libraries owned materials may only be checked out to a personal account.
    • May be recalled for use by other patrons.
  • Faculty Office Account
    • Law School owned materials may be checked out to a faculty office account.
    • No due date, no renewals, no recalls
    • Faculty may request an item for purchase and faculty office checkout (see Faculty Purchase Requests for more information).
    • Periodically inventoried by the Law Library.

Library Proxy Service

  • The Law Library Proxy Service allows a faculty member to authorize their research assistants to check out or place holds on library materials directly to the faculty member’s library account.
    • Library Materials
      • Only items owned by Penn State libraries may checked out using the proxy service.
      • Inter-library loan materials must be requested by either the faculty member or the Access Services Supervisor; these items are non-transferable.
    • Authorization
      • The Law Library requires both the faculty member and research assistant to sign an agreement form to authorize the service.
      • The service must be renewed on a yearly basis.
      • The forms can be obtained from the Law Library or online.
